Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has included Conor Sammon in his starting 11 for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Austria.

The Italian tactician had called up Wolves striker Kevin Doyle after Robbie Keane was forced to withdraw through injury, but has opted to start with the Derby County forward at Aviva Stadium.

Sammon is partnered by West Brom striker Shane Long, who retains his place after the 0-0 draw against Sweden.

Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan has replaced Paul Green in midfield after recovering from an ankle injury, while Jonathan Walters is once again favoured on the right wing instead of Hull City’s Robbie Brady.

John O’Shea will captain the team in the absence of Keane and will be partnered in defence by Ciaran Clark, with Seamus Coleman and Marc Wilson making up the back four.

However, Wilson’s place in the team could yet be taken by Reading’s Stephen Kelly due to a groin problem.

Ireland 11 to face Austria: Forde; Coleman, O’Shea, Clark, Wilson; Walters, Whelan, McCarthy, McClean; Long, Sammon
