(GSM) – Sampdoria have one foot in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League following a vital 1-1 draw at Palermo on Sunday.

‘Samp’ began the match with a two-points advantage over fifth-placed Palermo, who needed a win to surpass their opponents for fourth.

But it was the visiting side to draw first blood as Giampolo Pazzini scored the opening goal from the penalty spot nine minutes after the break.

Palermo were handed a spot kick themselves in the 68th minute, and Fabrizio Miccoli converted to lead the Sicilians to 1-1.

Sampdoria avoided a second goal however and as such remain in fourth place with just one more round of games to go in the Serie A.
