Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer has begun the process of revamping his squad, and wants to make Roque Santa Cruz his first signing.
Kreuzer succeeded Frank Arnesen on June 4 and the 47-year-old is already making plans to improve the squad with new players and remove those he does not believe to be good enough.
Hamburg missed out on European qualification last season as they finished seventh in the Bundesliga, but a lack of goals is something that hampered their progress and Kreuzer believes Santa Cruz is the perfect choice to help resolve that problem.
The Paraguayan striker was released by Malaga at the end of the La Liga season and Kreuzer is keen to move quickly and bring him to the club.
The 31-year-old made 155 appearances for Bayern Munich during a previous spell in Germany and has all the attributes Hamburg are looking for.
“Santa Cruz fits squarely into our requirements,” he told German newspaper Bild. “He can play alone in the top, front fasten the balls and takes a certain amount of experience.”
However, there are some players that the new sporting director is looking to move on, with midfielders Gojko Kacar and Robert Tesche, and striker Marcus Berg among those heading for the exit.
“We want to thin out the squad,” he added. “We have set ourselves that there is no more value of work with this trio.”
