Santon to stay at Newcastle; Shaw inks long-term extension

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is expecting Italy international defender Davide Santon to stay at the club in January.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is expecting Italy international defender Davide Santon to stay at the club in January, despite reported interest from Serie A giants AC Milan, Sky Sports understands.

Earlier this week, AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi revealed his admiration for Santon, formerly of Inter Milan, fueling speculation that the Rossoneri were poised to make a move for the Italian full-back.

Since then, Santon has reassured both Alan Pardew and the Magpies’ supporters that he is fully committed to the club.

Santon, 22, is the only Newcastle United player to have started each of the club’s 21 matches in the English Premier League this season.

“He’s had a terrific season. I don’t know about interest from Inter to AC, how that’s going to work,” said Pardew.

“I think he is quite happy being in a Newcastle jersey and he’s learning his trade – he has still got a lot of improving to do.”

The once highly-rated 17-year-old Internazionale Milano starlet has made a ‘wee club in the North East’ his home, but it is just a matter of time before Santon leaves St James’ Park for pastures new.

Where and when will the 22-year-old go when his time comes? Only time will tell. Until then, he remains a Newcastle United player, much to the delight of Alan Pardew, and rightfully so.

Shaw inks long-term extension

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw has inked a new long-term deal at the St Mary’s Stadium, playing down speculation linking the teenage sensation with a January move to Arsenal, ESPN Soccernet reports.

Shaw, 17, has impressed scouts across Europe since breaking into the first-team at Southampton this season.

The news of his new deal will surely end speculation regarding his future during the January transfer window, but expect his name to be mentioned when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

“I have spoken with the chairman about a long term plan for me at the club,” Shaw told the Saints’ official website.

“To put an end to all the speculation, I will be committing my future to Southampton. I’m not going anywhere.

“I think Southampton is the place to be for young kids like me. I’m playing in the Premier League for the first team and that is all anyone wants to be doing, so I just want to carry on.”

The 17-year-old has made 14 appearances in all competitions for the Saints during his breakout season. He is yet to be booked.
