Sao Paulo did what they had to do to win the Brazilian Serie A championship for the third time in a row. A single goal at Goias Goiania was enough to maintain their lead over Gremio.

The goal that earned the championship was scored in the 22nd minute and came from Borges. Sao Paulo failed to get another to secure the win without having to go through a nerve-wrecking final phase, but Goias lacked the quality to net an equaliser.

Gremio needed Sao Paulo to slip up in order to have a small chance of winning the championship but as that didn’t happen, the 2-0 win over Atletico Belo Horizonte was of very little use.

Tcheco scored a penalty goal in the 62nd minute and Soares doubled the advantage twenty minutes later.

The top five is completed by Cruzeiro, Palmeiras and Flamengo. Vasco da Gama, Portuguesa Sao Paulo and Ipatinga FC finish at the bottom.
