Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt has denied rumours that former Real Madrid midfielder Guti is set to join the Bundesliga club.
Spanish newspaper AS had reported that the midfielder appeared to be on his way to Schalke after reaching an agreement over a contract until the end of the season.
However, Heldt has now come out and refuted the claims, criticising the paper in the process.
“That’s not true, it is unfounded. Guti was a top player but it’s not a topic for us. Only because AS writes some crap, it does not mean that it is true,” he told Germany’s Sport1.
Guti has been a free agent ever since he left Besiktas in November 2011, and has been expected to continue his career outside of Europe.
It has been reported that Guti had already agreed terms with Schalke about a six-month deal, and would travel to Gelsenkirchen this week to put pen to paper.
