Schalke duo nears summer exit

Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes and Joel Matip could both be leaving at the end of the season, Bild has suggested.

The Miners captain has a contract until June 2017 at Veltins Arena, but the club widely expect him to leave in the summer due to his €17.5 million release clause.

Even Schalke coach Roberto Di Matteo recently admitted that Howedes might be leaving at the end of the current campaign.

It is, therefore, even more important to persuade fellow defender Joel Matip into signing a new deal at the club, but the first signs are not positive.

The 23-year-old who has just over a year left on his current deal, is far from happy with the club’s first offer and there is a chance he will be quitting Veltins Arena as well.

Schalke boss Roberto Di Matteo can also count on talented centre-backs Matija Nastasic, Kaan Ayhan and Marvin Friedrich, but he will need to add some experience to the back line as well if both Howedes and Matip depart.
