Schalke reveal contract talks with Huntelaar

Bundesliga outfit Schalke remain optimistic about their chances of keeping hold of star striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

The Dutchman turned out to be one of club’s most successful transfer recruits in history, with his hat-trick at the weekend seeing him break the 100-goal barrier.

But, with Huntelaar’s current deal due to expire at the end of the season, Schalke face a real battle on their hands in an attempt to persuade the 31-year-old to stay.

Nevertheless, it appears that the striker is quite happy at Veltins Arena and has expressed his desire to remain with the Miners despite heavy interest in his services.

“We want him to finish his career at Schalke,” sporting director Horst Heldt told Sport Bild. “We already had a conversation.

”The two sides then indicated that they could see the contract being extended. We agreed to meet for the second time before Christmas. Then we will go into detail.”

Klaas Jan Huntelaar has been in fine form at the start of the new season, bagging 10 goals in 18 competitive fixtures.

Schalke have revived their Champions League hopes with a 4-1 triumph over Mainz and the Miners can now be backed at 11/10 to achieve a top 4 finish.
