Schurrle wanted to stay at Chelsea

Germany international forward Andre Schurrle has revealed he did not want to leave Chelsea but is looking forward to regular first-team football at VfL Wolfsburg.

Germany international forward Andre Schurrle has revealed he did not want to leave Chelsea but is looking forward to regular first-team football at VfL Wolfsburg.

Schurrle, 24, joined Wolfsburg for a club-record fee of £24.6 million on deadline day after failing to establish himself as a regular fixture at Stamford Bridge.

“I wanted to stay but the last weeks or last month I tended towards changing something because I wanted to do what is fun for me and that is to play football,” Schurrle said. “I could only do it briefly at Chelsea in the past weeks.”

After arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for £18 milion in 2013, Schurrle scored 14 goals in 67 appearances in all competitions from the Blues.

The Germany international added: “I think I had a good time with Chelsea.

“My first season was very good, then there was the World Cup. I was a starter at the beginning of the season until an illness moved me behind. But the team continued to win so yes… I am still confident and know what I can do.

“I am not here in Wolfsburg to sneak over the pitch seeking my form. I am highly motivated and will try everything I can to help the team immediately.”

Berahino eyeing ‘bigger things’

West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino has hinted he may be looking to move onto ‘bigger things’ when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.

The England Under-21 international, whose current contract at The Hawthorns is due to expire on 30 June 2017, was linked with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window; however, nothing materialised.

West Brom (5-7-11) are currently just three points above the bottom-three, but Berahino is hopeful if he can keep the club in England’s top-flight, the club’s supporters will not ‘mind’ him pursuing pastures new in the summer.

“I’ve got to stay focused on what I’m doing right now, which is scoring the goals and keeping West Brom in the Premier League,” the 21-year-old told Sky Sports News.

“If I can keep them in the Premier League and score as many goals as I can, I’m pretty sure the fans wouldn’t mind me pushing on and going on to bigger things.”

Regarding the January signing of Darren Fletcher from Manchester United, Berahino added: “He’s done it, he’s been there before, he knows what it’s about.

“You can see he’s got that seriousness about him and wants to help the team to win as many games as possible.”

Berahino has bagged nine goals in 23 English Premier League appearances for the Baggies this season.
