Motherwell missed a chance to move within one point of table-toppers Celtic as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at St Mirren on Friday.
Stuart McCall’s side could have put serious pressure on the Celtic Park outfit with victory but they were beaten by a hungrier St Mirren side who belied their lowly standing on the league table.
Starting the day second from bottom in the league, St Mirren started well and took a surprise lead on 39 minutes.
The goal came from striker Steven Thompson and just three minutes later he doubled his account.
Motherwell did pull a goal back, through substitute Robert McHugh with 13 minutes left, but it was not enough as St Mirren triumphed in front of more than 4000 home fans.
