Scottish Premier League wrap: Celtic close gap as Rangers held

Celtic moved within 10 points of bitter rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premier League after a 2-0 win at Inverness as the leaders were held.

Anthony Stokes bagged two goals in the second half after Inverness’s Greg Tansey was given a straight red in the first half for a raised elbow.

Stokes finished off a neat passing move with James Forrest and Garry Hooper on the hour mark for the first and volleyed in from a tight angle 11 minutes later for his second.

Celtic have a game in hand on leaders Rangers, who could not break through St Johnstone at Ibrox in a goalless draw.

It was Steve Loma’s first match in charge of Saints and he got what he came for with Rangers going close on a couple of occasions. Steven Davis saw his free-kick well saved in the first half while Nikica Jelavic saw his header blocked in the second half.

Motherwell are level on points with Celtic after a 2-1 win at Aberdeen with Omar Daley scoring the winner.

Dundee edged Hearts 1-0 at Tannadice with Scott Robertson’s stunning header goal all that separated the sides.

Hibernian made up for a dismal first-half display with substitute Leigh Griffiths scoring his first goal at Easter Road to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock.

And St Mirren moved up to fifth on the back of a strong first-half showing against Dunfermline in a 2-1 win.

Kenny Mclean finished off from close range after an excellent run and cross from Nigel Hasselbaink before Hasselbaink slid in for the second, connecting with a low delivery from Steven Thompson.

Joe Cardle’s wicked delivery deflected in off goalkeeper Craig Samson to pull one back for Dunfermline three minutes after the hour but that was all at Paisley.
