Rangers got back to winning ways in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday, thrashing Hibernian 4-0 at Ibrox.

Ally McCoist’s side were coming off a 1-1 draw with Aberdeen in their most recent league outing, but they started positively against their relegation-placed opponents, taking the lead on 27 minutes when Steven Davis scored the first of his two goals.

Sone Aluko started a counter-attack from a Hibernian chance, and put through Davis who finished cleanly into the bottom corner.

David Healy then doubled Rangers’ lead when he rounded Hibernian goalkeeper Mark Brown for the hosts’ second goal 10 minutes after the interval.

It would not be a happy debut wearing the captain’s armband for Hibernian defender James McPake, who received a second yellow card on 71 minutes to deepen his side’s woes.

Aluko curled in a free-kick from outside the area for Rangers’ third goal, before Davis completed his brace late to move the Scottish powerhouse within one point of leaders Celtic having played a game extra.

Elsewhere, Motherwell earned a 3-2 home win over St Johnstone at Fir Park to go six points clear in third spot.

Aberdeen extended their unbeaten streak to six in all competitions when they beat cellar-dwellers Dunfermline Athletic 1-0, while Inverness and St Mirren played out a goalless stalemate at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
