Steven Thompson’s header sealed St Mirren’s 2-1 win over Inverness CT, which saw Celtic extend their lead atop the Scottish Premier League.

Thompson rose highest to meet Gary Teale’s cross in the 82nd minute to give St Mirren their second win in a row, while Welsh full-back Adam Matthews was the hero for Celtic as the SPL leaders smashed Kilmarnock 4-1.

In Paisley, Inverness levelled just before half-time thanks to Billy McKay’s penalty to cancel out Esmael Goncalves’ strike for the home side in the 26th minute.

Goncalves’ goal made it two in as many games since joining St Mirren on loan from Portuguese club Rio Ave.

Inverness, who sit in second, dominated after half-time but it was St Mirren who took the points after Thompson’s header went in off the post.

With Inverness losing, Celtic extended the gap at the top to 15 points as they claimed their fourth consecutive victory.

Celtic lead 1-0 at half-time after first-half substitute Joe Ledley struck from outside the box in the 41st minute.

Kilmarnock hit back three minutes after the break thanks to a goal from Cillian Sheridan but the home team restored their lead almost immediately when Matthews crunched a long-range shot into the net in the 50th minute – his first league goal for Celtic.

Gary Hooper set up Anthony Stokes to make it 3-1 in the 78th minute before Matthews wrapped up the win five minutes later.

While Inverness and Motherwell are Celtic’s closest rivals on 37 points, they both have a game in hand on the Glasgow giants.

In other results, Ross County extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 1-0 win over Hibernian, Hearts defeated Dundee United 1-0 and St Johnstone thumped Aberdeen 3-1.
