Serie A has lost its appeal

Inter celebrateI used to be a really big fan of Italian football and Serie A. My love for the Italian game was soured by the scandal and corruption which appears to be rift within the Italian game .

Dropping standards

However it wasn’t so much the fact that the players or clubs were doing wrong. Its the fact that the standard and reputation of Serie A dropped dramatically when the likes of Juventus and AC Milan were punished for their part in scandals.

Inter dominance

Inter are completely dominate in the league and are a cut above the other clubs in player quality. Although I’m a big Inter fan and have been since I was 10, it almost gets boring watching the Nerazzurri win title after title, almost!

European failings

Unfortunately for me and every other Inter fan the club can’t replicate their domestic triumphs in the Champions League. Every season I have high hopes for Inter and every season they flatter to deceive. Apart of Inter’s problem is that they are so used to winning that they get complacent and against teams in Europe they punished for that complacency.

I recently watched Inter surprisingly struggle against a relatively poor Roma side. Although they got a draw against Claudio Ranieri’s men it was almost like they were in first gear. It was like they were just expecting to show up and collect the points and most weeks they do.

Week opposition

Their closest competitors this season are the same two of the last few years their city rivals AC Milan and Juventus. They are currently five points clear of Juve and AC are a further two points behind. They will probably run away with their fifth consecutive Serie A title but unless they progress in Europe then the fans will see the season as another wasted season.

Not attractive

Instead of being attracted to Serie A top players and bosses are leaving for the bright lights of La Liga and the Premier League. Serie A used to be the top league in Europe. Everybody who was anybody wanted to play in Serie A and now it simple can’t compete with the other two top leagues. Its as if young foreign players now sign for Italian clubs as a way of getting nearer to Serie A and the Premier League.

Bad news for national side

The downfall of Serie A has not helped the development of young Italian players either. The Italian national squad currently looks like the cast of Cocoon. They may have won the last World Cup but their squad has aged fours years since then and are starting to creak.

Its Ironic that two of top youngster coming through in Serie A are at Inter in the shape of striker Mario Balotelli and full-back Davide Santon. Neither are first team regulars though. They are both still in contention for next years World Cup but could miss out due to not getting regular football. A January loan move has been mooted for Santon, which could help the full-back get  the first team action he needs.

Can Serie A recover?

I fear for the Italian top flight. I don’t think it will ever get back to the top of the European football tree. The standard has dropped too far and with the Russian Premier League and German Bundesliga both making giant leaps in recent years they could find themselves even further down the pecking order of European leagues.

The glory days of the Serie A are long gone and something has to be done to halt the slump. However I’m not sure how that can be achieved. It might need to get worse before it gets better for Serie A but for Italian football sakes I hope the league can make a recovery.

the reason why the CL is more interesting is because the top teams from each country are fighting to be the best in Europe. You are correct, Gooner 11.

    interesting.

this year i have started watching serie A more than la liga…
personally, i find la liga boring as shit.
last year, partly due to the number of dutch players on Madrid, i started paying attention more to la liga, but as much as i tried i just couldn’t get into it.
premier league definitely top both, but the best annual competition has to be the champions league.

    TO ANSWER THE QUESTION:

    YYYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
The Serie A has lost appeal. Dont know who the dunderheads are to rank Serie A as top league in the world. The best league in the world is the Premiership. It has been a whole lot more unpredictable this year than it or the Serie A has been for years.
As Van Basten said, the Italians have been known for defensive play, which I find pretty dull. The only times when I have watched a Serie A game and things go into what I call the “UnItalian Football style being played by Italians (ironically)”, is when I am watching Inter. It will be no surprise to see them take the league title AGAIN. All the other teams are being dull. Juventus have been dull every now and then, but earlier this season they were fairly exciting. Wonder where that has gone. . .
When I make the professionals, I will not be going to the Serie A. . .

Hi, Gregorio I watch an unbelievable amount of football. Fiorentina might have impressed in the Champions League but have they threatend to end Inter’s dominance of Italian football? The answer is no. I can still see the Viola going out of the Champions League.

And don’t get me started on Juventus. Lyon and Bordeaux and have already qualified for the knockout stages so does that make the French Ligue one a top league?

    * an error. This should be “La Liga” and not “Serie A”:
For this reason, star players like Kaka (who left Serie A), Ronaldinho, Diego etc. won’t be able to shine as much as they would if they’ve played in Serie A for istance.

Yes, Serie A has really lost its appeal in the last 2-3 years. Their lack of success in the European Cups have not helped either. They might be the reigning World Champions on a national level, but the success on the club level has faltered since AC Milan’s glory days.

Personally, I think there are 2 major things that undermines the problem:

    1. Style of play. Italians have always been known for the defensive minded approach which does not favor attacking style of football with a lot of flair. For this reason, star players like Kaka (who left Serie A), Ronaldinho, Diego etc. won’t be able to shine as much as they would if they’ve played in Serie A for istance.

    2. Gap between rich and poor. The top teams of Italy are miles ahead of the majority of the clubs. With the exception of AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan, the likes of Roma and Lazio will never be able to compete with those 3 in terms of spending. And for the rest of the league, they are miles away from being able to spend anywhere close to what these teams are.

Therefore, this create boring matchups both for fans and players (many teams you see the big teams drop points against lower teams).

I year or two ago, I would agree with you. Perhaps you dont want football that much, but Serie A is actually as of present the top league in the champions league, we impressed the most especially Fiorintina. Juventus are using the likes of Giovinco Diego and camernesi which is proving quiet effective. Also Milan with there trident Pato-Borriello/Inzaghi/Ronaldinho, is also proving quiet effective as well, seeing off the Millionairs Real Madrid. Serie A infact is proving they are being underestimated. Inter need more flair in the squad, it will be interesting to see what they will do without Snejider. They need more attacking minded players
