Juventus escaped after a bit of controversy, Inter continued their dominating performances, and Sampdoria won the Derby della Lanterna in a very exciting week of Italian football.

Handball or no Handball?

Juventus were lucky to keep their streak alive of 30 consecutive home wins in the Serie A, and they emerged victorious due to a 97th minute questionable penalty call. Benatia put the hosts up early before Bacca equalized later on, but it was ultimately Dybala’s last gasp penalty that sealed the deal for Juventus. Milan were understandably angry with the call, but they have an easy string of matches up ahead, and they’ll need to make the most of their chances if they wish to be in contention for a European spot.

Goalfest at San Siro

Inter continued to dominate their opponents, now winning their last two matchups by a combined score of 12-2. Banega and Icardi both had a hat trick with Gagliardini providing the seventh. Freuler provided a consolation goal for Atalanta, who looked flummoxed and deflated following the rout. Pioli’s men have experienced a remarkable turnaround, and they are in a great position for a Europa League spot.

Sampdoria Win Derby

Sampdoria won the Derby della Lanterna thanks to a goal from Colombian, Luis Muriel. While the win may not be important for the table, it will certainly be welcomed by the fans and the players, who will have no doubt enjoyed defeating their rivals, especially away at Genoa.

Torino Suffer Fatal Collapse

As we’ve seen several times before this season, Torino’s defense failed them in the later stages of the match, leading to a disappointing collapse. Immobile opened the scoring only for Lopez to equalize for I Granata. It was looking good for Torino up until the last five minutes, when Keita and Anderson scored to give Lazio the win. Inzaghi’s squad is now fourth in the league, a good standing for the club.

Fiorentina Strike Lucky

Fiorentina were unable to convert their chances for most of the match against Cagliari, but Nikola Kalinic was the hero with his 92nd minute goal. The goal was hugely important for the Viola who will need it if they wish to take part in the race for Europe. They now sit seven points behind Atalanta, who hold the final Europa League spot.

Roma Don’t Slip Up

Roma made no mistake against Palermo, the goals coming from El Shaarawy, Dzeko, and Peres respectively. It was a relatively simple win for Roma who are fighting to make sure that they will not have to qualify for the Champions League via the playoffs, something they failed to do this year.

Crotone Woes Continue

Crotone’s form has been poor this season, and a match on the road against Napoli certainly didn’t help. Two goals from Insigne and one from Mertens guided the Partenopei to victory. It will be a tight race with Roma, and Napoli will want to have another chance at the Champions League after being eliminated by Real Madrid earlier this week.

Udinese Overwhelm Pescara

Zeman’s luck has all but run out, it seems. Zapata, Jankto, and Thereau put Udinese up by three early on, and Muntari’s goal was not enough to get the hosts over the deficit. Pescara’s season is doomed, and they’ll have to fight their way back up to the Serie A if they wish to compete with the top tier teams. Pescara hasn’t been too successful in the top flight, lasting only one season at the most.

Chievo Too Good for Empoli

Chievo overpowered Empoli, the goals coming from Inglese, Pellissier, Birsa, and Cesar. Empoli are fortunate though as all the teams below them lost as well. As long as they don’t make any major mistakes, it seems as they will be safe in the Serie A for the time being.
