Milan and Inter both lost as the race for Europe got a bit more intense.

It was a thrilling week in the Serie A, one filled with goals and excitement. Here’s a roundup of the week’s events.

Inter Fall to Fiorentina

It was quite an entertaining match between the two sides, one that resulted in an impressive nine goals. Fiorentina jumped out to an early lead courtesy of Matias Vecino before Inter put two into the net from Perisic and Icardi to go ahead. Fiorentina seemed to have sealed the deal with four unanswered goals from Astori, Vecino, and two from Babacar, but Icardi had other plans as he fired two in the last seven minutes of the match. Inter weren’t able to overcome the deficit, and they came home with zero points.

Milan Waste Important Chance

Milan would have all but secured Europa League qualification with a win against Empoli, but they fell when they needed it most. Empoli were clinical, and they scored the first two goals of the match thanks to Mchedlidze and Thiam. Lapadula pulled one back, but they couldn’t find the equalizer. It was a much needed win for Milan who now find themselves in a much tougher position for Europe. They have to get the points this week against Crotone.

Lazio Make Easy Work of Palermo

Palermo had no answers early on as Lazio jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead thanks to a brace from Ciro Immobile and a five minute hat-trick from Keita. They slowed down a bit, and Rispoli scored two goals in the second half, but not to be outdone, Crecco scored for Lazio in the 90th minute. There was no hoe for Palermo, who will almost certainly be relegated to the Serie B following the conclusion of the season.

Genoa No Match for Juventus

It was too easy for the Bianconeri at home as they powered past Genoa, keeping Roma at bay. There were four different scorers — Munoz (own goal), Dybala, Mandzukic, and Bonucci — and Juventus have to be hapy with how their season is going. They’ll face Monaco for a chance to reach another Champions League final.

Don’t Mess With Roma

Roma eased past struggling Pescara after jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Goals from Strootman, Nainggolan, and Salah allowed Roma to rest. Pescara scored a consolation goal courtesy of Benali, but that’s all it was, a consolation goal. Roma will face Lazio in the Derby della Capitale on Sunday, and it should make for an exciting matchup as always.

Napoli Slip against Sassuolo

Napoli were unable to keep up with Roma as they emerged with the one point at Sassuolo. They struck first thanks to Mertens, but goals from Mazzitelli and Berardi put Sassuolo ahead. Milik was the unlikely hero after coming off the bench for the Partenopei, scoring the equalizer. Napoli now sit four points behind Roma, and they’ll need Roma to lose some points if they wish to qualify directly for the Champions League.

Atalanta Cement European Position

Atalanta extended their lead over the Rossoneri to five points after a win over Bologna. They jumped out to an early lead with goals from Conti and Freuler, but Bologna would keep up the fight, scoring two to equalize early in the second half. Caldara was the hero as he scored in the 75th minute to secure the win for Atalanta.

Torino Fire Past Chievo

Goals from Ljajic, Zappacosta, and Falque were more than enough to get past Chievo’s sole goal from Pellisier, as I Granata demonstrated their attacking prowess. Their defense, on the other hand, certainly needs some work.

Crotone Will Die Fighting

Crotone aren’t going to give up without a fight. They emerged victorious from their encounter against Sampdoria after goals from Falcinelli and Nwankwo powered them past an early goal from Schick. Unfortunately for them, Empoli also got the unlikely win. They’ll need a lot more of these performances if they wish to stay in the league.

Udinese Get Past Cagliari

It was all about the second half as goals from Perica and Angella got Udinese past Borriello’s strike. Both teams sit around mid-table (11th and 12th), so the victory was simply one of pride for Udinese.
