La Liga side Sevilla have sacked coach Marcelino, following the team’s poor 2011-12 campaign.
The decision, announced on the club’s website, will come as a surprise to Marcelino, who only said he was not going anywhere on Sunday.
The Andalusian outfit have collected only two points from their last seven Primera League encounters, dropping to 11th spot in the table with 26 points from 21 matches.
Marcelino’s future came to a head after Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat to Villarreal.
“I will not quit, although I am the most responsible (for the result),” Marcelino told reporters after the match.
“I will work until the people who make decisions know what to do about my future. I feel capable of turning this situation around.”
The 46-year-old former Racing Santander boss, who took over from Gregorio Manzano in the close-season, made a promising start to his career at Sevilla as they went unbeaten in their opening nine La Liga games.
Sevilla have not yet appointed a replacement, but are expected to start their search for a new head coach shortly.
