Alan Shearer is favourite to takeover at Bramall Lane should current Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell be sacked.
The Blades are currently languishing well outside the playoff zone and fans are starting to turn on Blackwell, with many calling for a change of personnel should there be any hope of promotion this season.
Shearer is said to be desperate to return to management after a brief spell in charge at former club Newcastle, and bosses at the Championship side believe the former England star is the man to take them to the Premiership.
“He’s desperate to get back in,” said a source close to the former England captain. “He waited for Newcastle and it didn’t happen.
“Now he wants another club. He has the hunger and he is just waiting for the right club with the right ambition.”
Shearer still has several commitments with his television and media work, although it is thought that he would be allowed to leave should a management opportunity came in.
