Should Terry lose England Captaincy?

Should John Terry remain England captain?Unless you have been living on another planet then you will have heard everything about John Terry’s alleged affair with Wayne Bridge’s ex-girlfriend.

The way the story has been portrayed in the British press, like its the biggest story ever. Its ridiculous the amount of column inches this story has received all over the world.

Unfortunately, I feel I must touch on this story as a lot of my readers will have an opinion on whether the Chelsea skipper should retain his captains armband with England.

Football

This incident is not football related and if it happened to the man in the street then nobody would have care about it. However because John Terry is the captain of England its discussed by everybody and their dog. I think Terry should be allowed to have some privacy, despite his celebrity status.

Role Model

Footballers are supposed to be role models for youngsters. However as society has changed, so have footballers. These lads are no longer on the same planet as the fans. They have alienated themselves by demanding ridiculous amounts of money for playing the game the fans love.

Footballers now seem to think they can get away with murder. Footballers are no longer role models and why should they be role models. Most youngsters will only see their heroes on the pitch and don’t really consider their off the field actions. I can’t see many 10 year-olds picking up the paper reading the story about Terry and going out to find a lingerie model to sleep with, to be honest.

Strong

John Terry is a leader on the pitch. There are not a lot of players in the England squad capable of leading the country but Terry is one of them. His mental strength is incredible, considering he had such media speculation hanging over his head he scored the winner against Burnley on Saturday and put in a good performance against Birmingham in midweek.

He maybe saw taking to the pitch as a release from what was happening off the pitch. Football has proved a good distraction for the 29 year-old. He showed no signs of strain and was solid as ever. However for all his mental strength on the pitch he has apparently showed some poor judgement off it.

Unsettled

The news of Terry’s controversial behaviour is believed to have unsettled a lot of the current England squad. Apart from the fact that former friend Bridge has been unsettled by the story coming out, other players are supposedly upset by the whole situation.

Terry is a popular figure amongst the Three Lions squad but apparently so is Wayne Bridge. The Manchester City full-back has revealed that he will not play for England while Terry is involved. Understandable really considering the situation but I don’t think Fabio Capello would ever choose Bridge ahead of Terry.

Decision

The English FA have announced today that the decision on whether Terry continues as captain is completely down to coach Fabio Capello. They have said that Capello will make the best decision on footballing grounds.

The Italian now has a difficult decision to make over Terry’s captaincy. There has even been calls for Capello to drop Terry from the England squad completely. That however would be over the top. Terry is one of the most influential players in the England side and Capello knows it would be hard to replace the 29 year-old.

Fabio Capello is one of the best coaches in the world for making tough decisions. He will make a decision which is in the best interests of England. He will make a rational and reasonable decision. I can’t see him jumping to any flash judgements. Hes too shrewd for rash decisions.

Apology

The scandal has came as a real blow for the England squad with the World Cup just months away. However  John Terry should come out and apologise to put the issue to bed. If he does it will calm the situation and Terry could get on with helping England win the World Cup.

Nobody in life is perfect, everybody makes mistakes and I’m sure the Chelsea skipper has regrets over what has happened. He has already lost Bridge as a friend, he could lose his wife and to take the England captaincy off him would be too much. I hope this is all forgotten by June and Terry leads England to glory in the World Cup.

Should he lose the captaincy? Are you joking? Fabio Capello, the master of discipline should get rid of him completely from the squad. I respect your opinion here, but I express my opinion a little differently.

Maybe right before the World Cup is starting, by which time his wife has decided what to do, ask him if he still wants to/thinks he can still be captain

You do make some valid points in your article. Football is a game of opinions and I’m sure there is those with points for and against John Terry keeping his captaincy. The final decision will come down to Fabio Capello and I would back whatever decision he makes.

haha…I highly doubt any football player would be banned from anything football b/c of adultery…good luck wishing tho.

I’m a loyal and rational kind of guy so i’m going to have to say Terry is on his own with this.

Personally, I do not condone Terry’s actions and I do not concern myself with his personal life…I trust his skills on the pitch tho and i’m only concerned with the Terry that dawns the Blue jersey…and i’m not sure of all the details behind this, but since Terry is a married man and running around behind the wife’s back, it’s only fair that him and his wife work it out…

As for Bridge, that’s not even his girl…it’s an ex – so who she’s bangin’ with is nobody’s business really…I understand the ties, but it’s to a child…not her sexual life. If he is still hung up on her, who’s problem is that? It is unfortunate, that this whole affair be blown up in Wayne’s face right now but to act like the woman is his life partner or something is not accurate…

I think Terry should willfully step down as Captain, as he’s created an awkwardness in the dressing room and he should show remorse for this and work on earning the respect of his teammates again…I don’t care if it’s his last World Cup or what – he brought this drama on to the team and should be held accountable…but he deserves his place on the team and I think grown men should see past all of this soon enough…Terry’s wife, maybe not so soon…Bridge probably owes him a boot in the steel region for the embarrassment, but not much more than that if you ask me…

Terry doesnt even look the part of a skipper. . . Gerrard, Beckham (too bad he retired), and maybe even G. Neville (I aint sure if he still plays for england, last time I checked he did) do look it.

Give it to one of them, Fabio Capello! Just make sure you lose to the U.S. haha!!!

Just so you know Brad, Gary Neville hasn’t played for England in awhile due to his injury problems at United.

haha Neville…due to injury problems – aka getting too old and slow.

i agree with CFC on all accounts…
also, the bastard is still a leader ON THE PITCH, how could you say he doesn’t look the part? Probably the best English defender too.

Aw. . . Neville NNNOOOOO!! He’d have been better than Terry, though.
But he is prolly the best Lions’ defender. . . he’ll definitely give Donovan and the others a hard time breaking through.

  10. gooner-11

    February 5, 2010

haha…no worries Brad…I know – love can make you delusional sometimes…

and no one said having an affair with your best-friend’s ex is wrong – there is just this ‘idea’ that you don’t do it, but it’s open game for anyone…haha…it just works out better when you don’t get caught…which begs the question, how do you know who Neville has been bangin’?

How about we just score one for all the players (playaz!) that never got caught…(yet)..haha.

it is wrong especially in the eyes of your gal. . . ever heard the country singer Miranda Lambert’s song, White Liar? truth comes out a bit every time, eventually. if nev was doing it, he’d prolly be under the scrutiny of the tabloids now. . .

    baka. . .
stupid comment. . . just stupid. but pretty funny.

HAHA @ feral hog hunting…ok Brad – it’s not exactly open game, but I would think that if you are single, the game is wide open…

Baka – sometimes it’s better to just lie and say you have a girlfriend… you’d be surprised at how much more women want you when they can’t have you…stupid but true…look where it got Terry…and Tiger…

and Miranda Lambert? Maaan – I don’t listen to country music…it plays with your emotions too much…did you ever check out Elizabeth Lambert tho?
