Tottenham Hotspur’s Gylfi Sigurdsson is confident his team are capable of reaching the Europa League round of 16 at the expense of Lyon.

Two long-range free kicks from Gareth Bale earned English Premier League outfit Spurs a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane last Thursday, although the French visitors did grab an important away goal thanks to Samuel Umtiti’s stunning half-volley from the corner of the penalty area.

Nevertheless, Sigurdsson has backed Tottenham to finish the job when the return leg kicks off at the Stade de Gerland on Thursday.

“We always look capable of scoring, especially away from home and we’ve done that in almost every game,” Sigurdsson told the club’s official website.

“We’re confident we can go out there and get a goal or two, and if we do, it will be a huge positive for us.

“If we get an early goal, things will be looking good.”

Despite his optimism, off-season arrival Sigurdsson is well aware of the quality in the Lyon ranks and admitted it will be no easy feat to eliminate the Ligue 1 side on their turf.

“They showed at White Hart Lane that they are a good team with talented, individual players who can cause some damage,” he said.

“I thought they started slowly in the first leg but they grew into the game and then scored an unbelievable goal.

“(Umtiti) will probably never score another goal like that in his career. That shows we have to be aware of their quality and ready for them.”
