Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed midfielder David Silva faces a four-week injury lay-off.

The Spain international sustained a knee problem in City’s 2-0 League Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday and was forced off after just nine minutes.

Silva, who has four goals from 17 appearances in all competitions this season, will now miss Sunday’s derby with Manchester United as well as the crucial UEFA Champions League tie with CSKA Moscow next week.

Pellegrini is disappointed to be losing such an influential player, but remains confident his squad has sufficient depth to cope with Silva’s absence.

“David has a problem in his ligament,” said the City boss. “Maybe he will be out around three or four weeks so he will not be available for the derby.

“David is a very important player but we have a squad and we will have to replace him with another player.”

Samir Nasri made his return from groin surgery as a replacement for Silva on Wednesday.

Pellegrini, meanwhile, confirmed that Yaya Toure should shake off a groin problem to play against United this weekend.

“He [Toure] has a small problem,” the Chilean added. “We will see him tomorrow [Saturday] but I think he will not have any problems to play.”
