Diego Simeone leapt to the defence of Atletico Madrid’s style of play following the 1-0 win at Almeria.

The La Liga champions required a set-piece goal to grab the points, Miranda heading home to secure his side’s first triumph at Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos.

It was also the 100th victory of Simeone’s tenure in all competitions and the head coach made it clear that the manner of victories is of little importance to him.

He said: “In order to have corners, you have to attack. The team did well because they created this possibility.

“Miranda did very well. He gave us a vital win in a place where getting positive results is always difficult.

“I’m not worried about winning from strategic goals because it’s part of the game.”

Atletico remain unbeaten in defence of their title having picked up three wins and two draws from five fixtures.
