Sneijder needed at Inter, says skipper

Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti has insisted Wesley Sneijder could still have a future at San Siro.

The Netherlands international recently claimed that it would be best for all parties concerned if he left the club in January, as his contractual dispute with the Serie A powerhouse continues to rumble on.

However, coach Andrea Stramaccioni has since stated he would be open to bringing the playmaker back into the first team, and veteran defender Zanetti has added the 28-year-old would be welcome to return should he chose to commit to the club.

Zanetti told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “The only one who can decide is him, and he must speak clearly and be honest. If he wants to stay, a solution can be found. I said to him: ‘Choose from the heart’.

“If he comes back and says, ‘I am looking ahead for the good of Inter’ there will be no problem. But he must be the first not to carry grudges.”

Zanetti went on to discuss the future of Ricardo Alvarez, saying he believes his Argentine compatriot will remain with the club beyond the January transfer window despite speculation surrounding his future.

“I don’t think Ricky has disappointed, (although) he has struggled to find consistency,” Zanetti continued.

“If he could play ten games in a row, today he could say different things.

“Unfortunately, he is often injured, but you cannot say he is soft: he always wants the ball and even though San Siro is not easy (to play at), he has never been afraid to continue to ask for the ball.

“I think at the end of January he will still be with us, and then a decision will be made at the end of the season.”
