Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has revealed that PSV Eindhoven star Memphis Depay rejected a chance to join the Saints in the summer transfer window.
The Premier League side attempted to recruit the highly rated winger after he impressed playing for the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup, but even with PSV ready to do business, the player ultimately opted against moving to England.
Ronald Koeman admits that he regrets not signing the Oranje hotshot, although he has a feeling Depay will regret his decision as well.
“We informed our interest to his agent,” Ronald Koeman told reporters. “With his style he would fit well in England.
“Memphis is fast, focused and physically strong. Southampton would have been an excellent springboard for him to the very top of the Premier League.
“Here he would have had time to get used to the level and would have had two Dutch coaches who have great confidence in him, but he chose to stay at PSV. A big shame for us, but also for him.”
Memphis Depay, 20, has seen his stock rise a great deal over the last year or so, with the winger having bagged 19 goals in last 42 Eredivisie appearances.
His suitors Southampton host Manchester United this evening hoping to make amends for back to back losses to Manchester City and Arsenal, with Saints available at 15/8 to claim maximum points.
