Spain´s Silva hits back at critics

Spain forward David Silva believes his side’s 4-0 thrashing of the Republic of Ireland on Thursday should silence some of their critics.

The Manchester City star scored the third goal as Vicente del Bosque’s side ran riot in Gdansk to leave the reigning European and World champions in pole position to qualify from Group C at Euro 2012.

And after taking criticism from some pundits following the 1-1 draw with Italy in their opening match, Silva believes Spain have shown they are serious contenders to claim victory at an unprecedented third successive major tournament.

“After 1-1 versus Italy there was plenty of comments,” he said.

“This result against Ireland is very good for us in terms of morale and confidence.”

The defeat means Giovanni Trapattoni’s side are out of the competition, while Spain know victory in their final match against Croatia will see them top the group.

Besides a coolly taken finish past Shay Given for his goal, Silva also played an instrumental role in Spain’s victory and the former Valencia player admitted the wet conditions had suited their passing style.

“The pitch? I wish it would be always like this,” he said.

“Today it was wet and the ball rolled quickly. The goal? The ball came to me inside the area and I just tried to score through the hole I saw. Fortunately, it went good. I’m very happy with the goal.”
