Real Betis have confirmed the signing of Basel defender Markus Steinhoefer on a free transfer.
The 27-year-old spent two and a half years in Switzerland but with his contract coming to an end he has chosen to move to Spain.
Steinhoefer, who can play in defence or midfield, made 63 appearances for Basel last season as they won the league and cup double as well as reaching the UEFA Europa League semi-final.
Betis finished seventh in La Liga, qualifying for Europe, and Steinhoefer cannot wait to get started at his new club.
“I am very happy to play for Betis,” he told the club’s official website. “This is a very important step in my life and in my football career.
“I know I am at a big club and a in a spectacular League. Betis have been a club that have been following me for a long time and I have to thank them.
“They were seventh in a League as demanding as La Liga last season and this year they will be in Europe. These are some of the reasons as to why I have decided to come here.”
The German becomes Pepe Mel’s sixth signing ahead of the new season, with further arrivals expected before August.
