Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is determined to be Netherlands’ first-choice shot-stopper at the 2014 World Cup.
The former Ajax man has had to settle for a place on the bench of late, with Tim Krul the preferred man between the posts, but he is eager to win back the starting place.
“I would like to be the first choice goalkeeper at the World Cup,” Stekelenburg, a 54-time international, told Algemeen Dagblad.
“I found it hard to watch the duels with Italy and Germany from the bench. I sat there for so long.”
Despite his disappointment, Stekelenburg understands the selection policy of Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal.
“He always opts for the best players at the time,” he said.
