Stoke City have signed veteran goalkeeper Shay Given from Aston Villa, with Asmir Begovic’s time at the Britannia Stadium seemingly set to come to an end.
Begovic, Stoke’s regular number one in recent seasons, is expected to complete a switch to Chelsea, who sent Marco van Ginkel on a season-long loan to the Britannia Stadium earlier on Friday.
And with Thomas Sorensen having been released at the end of last term, Stoke manager Mark Hughes has moved to bring in additional experience in the form of Given, who he previously worked with at Manchester City.
Given ended the 2014-15 season as Villa’s first-choice keeper, but has been released from the final year of his deal to facilitate his move.
The vastly experienced 39-year-old – capped 128 times by the Republic of Ireland – will provide competition for Jack Butland at Stoke, who also added Jakob Haugaard to their goalkeeping ranks in May.
Hughes said: “I know Shay particularly well from our time together at Manchester City and I’m really looking forward to working with him again.
“He will not only be a great asset on the pitch as an outstanding goalkeeper but he’s also a fantastic character to have in the dressing room and around the club – a true professional.”
