Stramaccioni justifies Sneijder axe

Inter Milan coach Andrea Stramaccioni has defended his decision to leave Wesley Sneijder out of the squad for Monday’s trip to Parma.

Sneijder had been absent from training due to a disagreement over his contract with the Serie A side.

The Dutchman has been asked to take a wage cut by Inter director Marco Branca or face being transferred in January.

Stramaccioni said he had evaluated the situation and decided the club should be respected.

“I speak every day with Sneijder and with our president, therefore I’m aware of the whole situation,” he said.

“I believe the situation is becoming clearer. As a club, last summer Inter Milan decided to make very clear and precise player guidelines, which we have observed during the transfer campaign.

“The idea is that the club should be respected, but of course we should understand the player’s position.

“You’re speaking with a person who values Sneijder from a personal, football and human point of view and I know he knows that.

“It’s nothing personal, but right now you need to take into consideration my position, the position of the manager, who should only choose not to use a player based on his performance on the pitch.

“This is a technical choice based on my analysis. Of course, for the good of all parties, I hope we can solve the situation.”

Inter can move to second on the table, one point behind leaders Juventus, with a win at 10th-placed Parma.

“It’s going to be a difficult away match, but the last two matches have given Inter Milan some strong points again,” Stramaccioni said.

“We have great respect for Parma, but tomorrow we’ll be focused on our performance.”
