Striker debate riles Jancker

Carsten Jancker said he is angry with the debate over whether Mario Gomez or Miroslav Klose should lead the line for Germany at Euro 2012.

Coach Joachim Loew selected the Bayern Munich star Gomez for the duration of his side’s group campaign, and was rewarded when the 26-year-old put in match-winning performances against Portugal and Netherlands.

However, the Lazio veteran Klose was picked for his side’s 4-2 quarter-final win over Greece and found the net, leading to debate as to who would be given the nod for the last four clash with either Italy or England.

However, Jancker feels that Germany fans should simply be grateful that their side have two world-class strikers at their disposal.

“This debate angers me,” Jancker told Goal.com.

“Why do we always have to call everything into question? Joachim Loew has demonstrated time and again that his decisions are always right.

“Should we really quarrel over a striker who scored three times in this competition, and another who scored on his debut appearance?

“Let us finish the pointless talk and be thankful to have two world-class forwards in our squad.”

Jancker refused to pass judgement on Lukas Podolski, who was dropped in favour of Andre Schuerrle for the Greece clash after some indifferent performances in recent months.

“Lukas can certainly do better than that. Schurrle looked sharper in both of his appearances. But I would not want to give my verdict on that issue. What is certain is that we have enough quality in attack,” he said.

Jancker also gave his semi-final predictions showing optimism for the German outfit who will benefit from two days’ rest more than their opponent.

“Against Italy we would win 2-1, while if it were England we would edge it 3-1,” he said.
