Sunderland losing battle for French starlet

French newspaper L’Equipe is reporting that Marseille are set to sign Le Havre full-back Benjamin Mendy.

The France Under-19 captain has seen his name linked with a number of top European clubs following yet another successful season in Ligue 2.

Sunderland were believed to be leading the chase for the 18-year-old left back, but it appears he is set to join Marseille instead.

According to L’Equipe, Benjamin Mendy has joined Marseille for a training camp in Crans Montana on Friday night after agreeing personal terms with the French giants.

However, Premier League side Sunderland are still hoping they can hijack the deal at the last minute and win the race for the highly rated youngster.

Mendy, who has just one year left on his deal with Le Havre, has already made a total of 57 league appearances for the French side, while featuring in six matches for France Under-19 side.
