Paraguayan international defender Paulo da Silva joins English Premiership side Sunderland. This was announced by manager Steve Bruce.

The 29-year-old, captain for Paraguay’s national team with 50 caps, reportedly agreed to a three-year deal. His previous club, Mexican side Toluca, had already given their go-ahead for the switch.

“I’m delighted to have signed a player of Paulo’s experience,” Bruce said. “He is captain of his country and has played at the highest level in South America, so will bring leadership qualities to our side.”

Da Silva, born in Asuncion, represented many South American sides such as Lanus of Argentina and Libertad in his home country. The player also spent short stints at Italian sides Perugia and Venezia. Since 2003, he wore Toluca’s colors.
