Markel Susaeta has signed a new four-year contract extension with Athletic Bilbao, tying him to the club until June 2017.
The 24-year-old’s previous deal was set to expire in 2013 and potential suitors had been alerted to his availability, with Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson acknowledging an interest in the talented winger.
But on Monday, Athletic revealed Susaeta has signed an extension.
The Basque winger has been with the club since 2006, making over 60 appearances in all competitions last season.
Numerous clubs have asked Athletic about the availability of their young forward, but the club had been holding out in the hope he would choose to remain at Estadio San Mames.
Their persistence appears to have paid off, as one of La Liga’s top wingers has committed his future to the side.
Susaeta’s new buyout clause is reportedly set at 35 million pounds.
