Sydney slump depresses Del Piero

Sydney FC coach Steve Corica conceded marquee superstar Alessandro Del Piero is struggling to cope with a rare losing streak.

The Sky Blues’ run of outs extended to four when they fell to Adelaide United on Friday night 2-1.

Del Piero was clearly frustrated after watching Sydney claw back from a goal down to equalise before conceding again in the 88th minute at Allianz Stadium.

Sydney have now won just two games from eight and sit last on the table.

Their last victory was way back in round four on October 28.

“He’s frustrated we’re losing. He hasn’t lost for a long time back home in Italy,” Corica said of Del Piero.

“We’re losing games and it’s not nice to lose games. He’s frustrated and everybody should be frustrated.

“That’s football. When you’re down and conceding late goals… it’s tough to take.

“It’s just the way it’s going at the moment.

“We’ve got to get on with it and find a win from somewhere.”

Del Piero did everything in his power to conjure up that win against Adelaide but some of his team-mates simply aren’t on the same page.

And the team’s defensive frailties – that’s 16 goals conceded in four games – were again laid bare.

But Corica did see some positives despite a fourth straight loss.

“It was a much better second half. We got the goal and looked likely to score the next one as well,” he said.

“We created chances and pressured well, they’re all positives.

“But we’re conceding too many goals and that’s something we’ve got to look at.”

Adelaide coach John Kosmina doesn’t have a care in the world after guiding his team to the top of the table, but he can see a way out for former club Sydney.

He said: “They’re a decent team and things haven’t fallen for them.

“Tonight would have hurt a lot because they did so well to get back in the game and stay in that position and created a few opportunities to maybe get something out of it.

“We killed them off at the end. When the ball doesn’t roll for you, you’ve just got to work your way through it.”
