Terry close to Spartak Moscow switch

The Telegraph understands that John Terry is set to seal a shock move to Spartak Moscow.

Aston Villa had been looking to re-sign the defender, who spent last season with the Championship side though he is on the verge of completing a move to Russia which will see him pocket £1.8m in wages.

Spartak are currently managed by Massimo Carrera, who was Antonio Conte’s assistant at both Juventus and Italy.

Together Conte and Terry won the Premier League in the defender’s final season at Stamford Bridge – the fifth title he secured during his time with the club.

The thirty-seven-year-old also won five FA Cups, three League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League with the Blues while he was named the club’s Player of the Year in 2001 and 2006.

He won seventy-eight caps for England, scoring six goals and played at two World Cups and two European Championships while last season he played thirty-six times for Villa – his last appearance coming in the play-off final defeat to Fulham.
