Chelsea captain John Terry has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

Terry’s future had been subject to much speculation, with Chelsea announcing last Friday that they had offered their long-serving captain fresh terms to continue his 18-year playing career at Stamford Bridge.

The former England skipper subsequently revealed that he would take time to consider the “different role” on offer from his boyhood club before making a decision, before then offering an emotional on-pitch statement after Chelsea’s final game of the season on Sunday.

And Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that the 35-year-old has opted to stay put following discussions with incoming manager Antonio Conte, who will take over after leading Italy at Euro 2016.

Terry told the club’s official website: “I am delighted to sign a new contract with the club. Everyone knows I’m Chelsea through and through.

“I am looking forward to next season under the new manager and hopefully we can make it a successful one.

“Also, a special mention to the fans for their continued support. You’re the best in the world.”

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck added: “We are delighted John will spend another year at the club. He has been the leader of the Chelsea squad throughout the most successful period in our history.

“He recently reached the 700-appearance mark, which is testament to his professionalism and dedication as well as his undoubted talent.”

Director Marina Granovskaia also had warm words for Terry.

She commented: “We look forward to another year with John at the club, and believe he will be an important figure in the dressing room and on the pitch as we look to bring success back to the club next season.”

Terry, who joined Chelsea at the age of 14, has made 703 first-team appearances for the club, with a record 570 of those coming as captain.

The veteran centre-back has won every available major club honour throughout his glittering career, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2012.
