This summer has been a relatively quiet one so far in the Premier League transfer market.
However there has been some movement and today I will look at which players I think will prove the best value for money, in no particular order:
1) Shay Given (Aston Villa)
The Irish international keeper had fallen behind Joe Hart in the pecking order at Manchester City and struggled to get on the pitch at Eastlands last season.
However the 35 year-old was one of the most consistent keepers in the Premier League before losing his place in the team.
Villa needed a keeper to replace Brad Friedel, who left for Tottenham earlier in the summer. I don’t think Villa could have found a better replacement for the American.
2) Danny Graham (Swansea)
Swansea signed the striker for £3million from Watford after he enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his career so far. The Gateshead-born striker fired home 24 goals in last seasons Championship and be hoping to continue his goalscoring feats in the top flight next season.
It will be harder for him to score goals in the Premier League but he has got a good supply line in the likes of Nathan Dyer and Scott Sinclair. This is his big chance to impress in the top flight after failing to make the grade at Middleborough, when the Teesiders were in the big time.
3) Demba Ba (Newcastle)
The Senegalese international has arrived on Tyneside after a good spell at West Ham. Despite scoring seven goals in the Premier League last season, he couldn’t prevent the Irons from being relegated from the top flight.
Newcastle were in need of a replacement for former-hero Andy Carroll and Ba doesn’t seem like a bad replacement for the departed striker. He could become a folk hero on Tyneside.
4) David De Gea (Manchester United)
The youngster might have cost a big fee but he also has a big future ahead of him. At 20 years of age he is already being compared to Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas and predecessor at United Edwin Van Der Sar.
He has quite similar characteristics to the Dutchman in his build and his strengths. The youngster seems to have everything needed to be a top goalkeeper, apart from experience. However you only get experience by playing games and I’m sure he will become a top goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
5)Phil Jones (Manchester United)
Another youngster signed by the Champions for a big fee. Jones broke through into the Blackburn team on a regular basis last season and impressed with his composure and class.
Jones has been compared to John Terry in style and looks. However he is slightly more versatile than the England captain having already played in both central defence and central midfield for Rovers.
His performances for England alongside United teammate Chris Smalling for England at the under-21 European Championship only enhanced his reputation as one of England’s brightest young prospects.
For part two of my Premier League’s top buys pleased log on tomorrow and see who completes the list.
