Tottenham v Newcastle United: Confident visitors look for White Hart Lane repeat

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew feels their confidence is on the up as they seek a second straight Premier League win at Tottenham.

Pardew’s men finally claimed their first league victory of the season last Saturday as Gabriel Obertan’s strike proved to be enough to beat Leicester City 1-0.

Sunday’s visit to White Hart Lane promises to be a much sterner test of Newcastle’s capabilities but Pardew, whose team claimed a 1-0 away success at Tottenham last campaign, believes there is a greater spirit among his players heading into the clash.

“We went to Spurs last season and put in a fantastic performance. We will go back there with good memories,” he said.

“I can feel a little bit more confidence in and around the camp. But we have to improve results full stop going forward.

“We go to Spurs and have to be disciplined and offer a threat. It’s about trying to attack the game and get a win.”

Newcastle will need to be wary of a Tottenham side looking to bounce back on the domestic scene having lost 4-1 at Manchester City last weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team hammered Asteras Tripolis 5-1 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday – a victory lit up by Erik Lamela’s outrageous ‘rabona’ goal in the first half.

Both Pochettino and Lamela will hope that goal can be the catalyst for a run of form for the Argentina international, who forms part of a forward line that has scored just one goal between them in the Premier League this term.

Tottenham’s attack will have a good chance to boost their tally versus a Newcastle defence that is among the most porous in the division, shipping 14 goals in their first eight games.

Only QPR, Everton and Sunderland have conceded more than Newcastle, whose cause is not helped by a host of injury problems.

Pardew revealed in his pre-match press conference that top scorer Papiss Cisse is a doubt, while Chieck Tiote and Emmanuel Riviere – both of whom missed the Leicester win with unspecified injuries – could also miss out.

Full-back Paul Dummett is expected to feature despite picking up a hamstring injury versus Leicester, centre-back Mike Williamson is hoping to recover from a muscle injury and winger Sammy Ameobi has a knock.

Versatile defender Ryan Taylor is to be named in the squad, bringing a two-year knee injury nightmare to an end, but Siem de Jong (thigh), Rolando Aarons (hamstring) and Davide Santon (knee) are all still unavailable.

For Tottenham, Federico Fazio is suspended following his dismissal at City and midfielder Nabil Bentaleb may be absent with ankle injury that kept him out of the Asteras match.

Kyle Naughton (ankle) and Kyle Walker (pelvis) remain sidelined.
