Tottenham v Newcastle United: Pardew inspired by club legend in hunt for cup glory

Alan Pardew is desperate to continue Newcastle United’s League Cup progress at Tottenham and deliver silverware for a club legend.

Newcastle visit White Hart Lane for Wednesday’s League Cup quarter-final tie in a continued search for a first trophy since 1969 when they lifted the European Fairs Cup.

Bobby Moncur was captain of the side that defeated Ujpesti Dozsa and manager Pardew stated that he is inspired to lead Newcastle to League Cup glory by the 69-year-old.

“I call him our president, Bob Moncur is on the bus every week to remind me [when Newcastle last won a tropy],” Pardew said. 

“I can’t get away from it, but no-one would be more delighted than Bob if we can achieve something.”

Newcastle may face a difficult challenge in beating Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but they have already seen off Premier League opposition in the shape of Crystal Palace and 2014 League Cup champions Manchester City to get this far.

And Pardew – who is hoping for a better showing in north London than Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League defeat at Arsenal – is taking confidence from those wins.

“We have beaten two Premier League teams away from home, we have got to do a third time, it will be a tough game, but we will go there very strong.

“The win at Man City did give us energy, it gave us a lift and the win at Palace gave us a lift as well.

“One of us will be in the semi-final, both clubs would love to be in that position.”

Newcastle, who are without suspended full-back Daryl Janmaat, can also heed confidence from their 2-1 league victory at Tottenham in October.

However, Tottenham – who won their fourth League Cup in 2008 – head into the game buoyed by a 2-1 win at Swansea City courtesy of Christian Eriksen’s 89th-minute winner.

Pochettino, whose team have seen off Nottingham Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion thus far, believes the late victory highlighted Tottenham’s never-say-die attitude.

“We have a lot of young talent and we showed character and the right mentality,” he told the club’s official website.

“These are our characteristics and we need to keep this feeling – never give up in football, never give up every time we’re on the field, this is important.”

Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor is likely to once again miss out for personal reasons, while Etienne Capoue (knock) and Kyle Naughton (ankle) remain doubts.

Newcastle welcome back midfielder Moussa Sissoko from suspension, while Jak Alnwick will continue to deputise in goal in the absence of Tim Krul (ankle) and Rob Elliot (thigh).
