Trapp to consider PSG future with World Cup looming

Kevin Trapp acknowledges he needs to play if he is to go to the World Cup with Germany and so may need to leave Paris Saint-Germain.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper has largely been first choice at PSG since signing from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2015, but he now finds himself behind Alphonse Areola in the pecking order and has yet to make an appearance in all competitions this term.

Although Trapp played 90 minutes for Germany against France on Tuesday, he realises that something must change if he is to travel to Russia next year with the world champions.

“I have to play [to go to the World Cup] most importantly,” he told L’Equipe.

“For now, I have not thought about [the future]. There are only two games left before the announcement of the World Cup list, so yes, I will have to ask myself and think.

“In the meantime, I’m still at PSG and I’m happy. We’ll see.”

While Unai Emery has so far favoured Areola as PSG remain unbeaten in the current campaign, Trapp is determined to keep working hard and put pressure on the French keeper.

“It’s no secret that it’s complicated for me,” he said. “I always want to play.

“My last match was back in pre-season against Tottenham, but we talk to the coach. It’s his decision, you have to accept it.

“I work well every day to be ready. I want to believe that it ends up paying off to be fit and to work. I cannot stop now.”
