UEFA ban Nani, fine Ferguson

Nani has been handed a one-match ban from UEFA for his red card against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

And Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been fined 8,500 pounds for refusing to fulfil media obligations after the defeat.

United lost the tie 2-1 after the Portuguese winger was sent off on the hour mark, sparking widespread fury that was typified by his manager’s decision not to speak to the media after the game.

However, UEFA have backed the decision – made my Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir – as well as handing Ferguson a hefty fine for his reaction.

A UEFA statement read: “Manchester United FC midfield player Nani has been suspended for one match by UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body, following the red card he received at the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Real Madrid CF at Old Trafford on 5 March.

“Manchester United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson has been fined for non-fulfilment of the post-match media obligations at the same match.”

UEFA has to revoke Nani’s fine because after watching Benzema’s challenge with a high foot straight to the face of Kaya in April 3, 2013 Real Madrid vs Galatasaray quarterfinal leg 1 match, it is much obvious that Benzema’s challenge was far worse than Nani’s. UEFA needs to take action here unless they are trying to show how inconsistent they are in their rules and disciplinary actions. Such a bad Benzema challenge and not even a yellow card was given. Where is the justice?

Unbelievable! One of the WORST calls I’ve ever seen in 50 years of watching soccer and they ban Nani for a match to boot? They should issue an apology and make sure the ref never sees another professional game and go ref local high school matches. This is insult to injury from the high and mighty, just like giving Sir Alex a fine. Total rubbish.
