UEFA Champions League preview: Schalke v Galatasaray

An in-form Schalke will be confident of progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they host Galatasaray on Tuesday.

The German side will go into the second-leg match with a slight advantage after managing to score an away goal in their 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Turk Telekom Arena three weeks ago.

And they have won all three games since, including an impressive 2-1 win over local rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

However the win came at a cost with top scorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar tearing knee ligaments in the second half after earlier scoring what proved to be the winning goal.

Schalke will also be without first-leg goal-scorer Jermaine Jones after he picked up his third yellow card of the campaign in Istanbul, but will still be confident ahead of the game with Jens Keller’s side yet to lose in this year’s competition.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, have suffered an indifferent run of form recently, culminating in a shock 1-0 loss at home to Genclerbirligi on Friday with their lead on top of the Super Lig table cut to four points as a result.

New signing Didier Drogba missed a penalty in the loss and will be hoping for an improved performance on Tuesday after his largely ineffectual display in the first leg which saw him overshadowed by fellow striker Burak Yilmaz.

Turkish international Yilmaz is in career-best form at the moment, with the 27-year-old managing seven goals in the competition so far including a hat-trick against CFR Cluj in the group stage along with his side’s solitary goal against Schalke in the first leg.

Despite Schalke’s impressive form of late, Galatasaray will also be confident they can progress to the quarter-finals with the Turkish side winning their last two away games in the competition.

With Fatih Terim’s side needing to score at least one goal to stay in the tie, the stage is set for an intriguing European night at the Veltins-Arena.
