Akira Nishino’s Samurai Blue’s have been drastically short of form entering this months World Cup finals and will have one final chance to impress when they welcome Paraguay to the National Stadium in Tokyo on Tuesday evening.

For Nishino’s side, despite topping Group B in qualifying, the hosts on Tuesday only held a single point advantage over slipping out of the automatic positions and the Samurai Blues have continued to struggle in their build up. Coming off the back of a 2-0 loss away to Switzerland last weekend, Japan have failed to win any of their last five and their defeat to the Swiss now means they have lost their last three on the bounce. Along with failing to register a single goal in their last two, Nishino’s boys have seen their last three consecutive meetings with Paraguay end with under 2.5 goals.

As for Paraguay, while on paper it may have appeared that Los Guaraníes came close to booking their spot in Russia, interim boss Gustavo Morínigo has failed to help what is a sinking ship. Despite missing out on a playoff spot by two points, Paraguay, like their hosts, have now lost their last two matches on the bounce and have not found the net in either outing. Now remarkably losing 14 of their last 18 matchups in all competitions, Morínigo’s side must improve on their recent defensive issues, along with conceding 25 goals in qualifying, Paraguay have also only managed to keep one clean sheet since October 2016.
