Manchester United are set to open negotiations with Benfica over a summer move for defender Ezequiel Garay, according to O Jogo.
The Red Devils have long ago expressed their interest in the highly rated defender, who they see as a perfect long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother Martin, who is a chief scout at Old Trafford, has watched the Argentine on numerous occasions this season, and the entire technical department agree Garay is the man for the job.
With the season in full swing, the Red Devils could not fully focus on the operation in the previous weeks, but O Jogo reports that they are set to open talks with Benfica chiefs after getting eliminated from the Champions League.
Given that Chelsea are also keen on the 26-year-old, United officials are eager to wrap up the deal as soon as possible.
Ezequiel Garay has been earning rave reviews for his displays this season, and he is currently regarded an important player for both club and country.
