Germany have slipped to third, with the Netherlands and Brazil next best.
England are sixth, Argentina jumped two places into seventh, ahead of Croatia and Denmark.
Portugal were the big fallers, dropping five places to 10th.
Ivory Coast are the highest-ranked African team in 16th and Mexico head the CONCACAF countries in 19th.
Japan rose seven places to become Asia’s top-ranked side in 23rd place, one spot ahead of Australia.
