Villarreal Tuesday named Spain’s Ernesto Valverde as coach in place of Manuel Pellegrini, who is taking over at Real Madrid.

Valverde coached Olympiakos last season, but his contract was not renewed with the Greek club despite leading it to the domestic double this year.

Valverde, 45, has previously coached two Primera Liga clubs, Athletic Bilbao and Espanyol Barcelona.

Villarreal, fifth in the championship last season, are to play in the Europa League, formerly the UEFA Cup, in 2009-2010.

Chilean Pellegrini was named on Monday as the coach of Real Madrid, under the club’s new president Florentino Perez.
