Louis van Gaal has confirmed Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are fit to face PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The attacking duo have recovered fully following illness and an ankle knock respectively, while Marouane Fellaini is also in selection contention, but Phil Jones and Ander Herrera are out.

Both Jones and Herrera picked up knocks in the 2-1 Premier League win over Watford on Saturday and will not be risked, while Michael Carrick, who sustained ankle damage on England, is also sidelined. Bastian Schweinsteiger missed training on Tuesday but will be available for selection.

Luke Shaw, meanwhile – who suffered a broken leg in the reverse fixture in Eindhoven in September – will undergo a scan on the injury which will provide greater insight into the speed of his recovery.

“I think the first match was very disappointing, not only because of the result but because of Luke Shaw,” Van Gaal said. “He is a very important player.

“I didn’t buy a left back because I had, for example, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo. I think I can manage the situation but it’s a big loss because he is Manchester United’s best left-back.”

“I cannot answer because you have to be very cautious with an injury like that,” he added of Shaw’s expected recovery time.

“It can go very well one week and then very bad in another and he will be months behind. Now he’s a little bit fed up with the daily routine, so I give him four days off, but Friday he has a scan which will tell more about the injury.”
