Bert van Marwijk’s position as head coach of Netherlands will be reviewed after Euro 2012, according to the chairman of the Dutch FA.
Bert van Oostveen said that he would re-assess Van Marwijk’s role, and that building the squad for future tournaments would be the reason behind any future change of management.
“It’s a logical moment,” he told Voetbal International, referring to Van Marwijk’s upcoming performance review.
“When you look at the age of the current players, we have to bring in some new blood. For the 2014 World Cup, but especially for the Euro 2016.
“If we had a contract to 2014, the team could fulfil this project with the current players. We are looking forward to 2016 so we are monitoring the process of renewing the squad. Of course we don’t want the lose the quality of the current team.”
The chairman said that if Van Marwijk, who is contracted until 2016, was to leave the national team set-up and return to club management, he would have many options to choose from.
“There is no shortlist of clubs where Van Marwijk can go. We just know that Bert still has the ambition to train a top club once more. If that’s possible, we’ll give him the chance. We made agreements about the moment when he can leave the Dutch FA,” he said.
Following successive defeats in their opening two games of the tournament and a reported player revolt led by Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, the news comes as another blow to morale ahead of Oranje’s make-or-break match against Portugal on Sunday.
Van Marwijk, meanwhile, has hinted at several changes to his team for Sunday’s crucial match against Portugal.
The 60-year-old’s decision to deploy two holding midfielders in the starting XI has received widespread criticism, and Van Marwijk has admitted that he will have to make some changes for the last group match.
“Normally we have a lot of creativity and we are fast at the front, but against Denmark and Germany it was not there,” he told KNVB’s official website.
“But this happens in football. We lost two games, so I have to change my squad for match against Portugal.”
