Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy says a return to football could happen but most likely as a coach.

In an interview with the Telegraaf, the former Real Madrid man opened up about future football aspirations.

“I have watched with interest what Patrick Kluivert has done and I want to explore this avenue,” van Nistelrooy said.

“I at least want to get my paperwork, an internship and at least ‘the chance’.

“I’m still living in Spain and enjoy my free time. I train a bit in the morning hours and spend a lot of time on my foundation.”

Van Nistelrooy, who retired earlier this year, said he eventually wanted to return to playing.

“I’m asking to be a part of this New Year’s former Dutch internationals team that play exhibitionally against (amateur club) Royal HFC, but I’m not going to be in the Netherlands that day,” he said.

“I hope I’ll be able to play in the future.”

Van Nistelrooy scored 135 goals in 203 appearances for Manchester United, and tallied 35 goals in 71 matches for the Netherlands.
