Van Persie unsure of long-term United future

With 18 months left to run on his contract, Robin van Persie admits he is in the dark over his long-term Manchester United future.

Robin van Persie is unclear about whether he has a long-term future at Manchester United. 

The Netherlands international striker is in his third season at Old Trafford following his August 2012 move from Arsenal and has 18 months left on his existing deal. 

While his return of 56 goals in 97 appearances for United is excellent, Van Persie has been hampered by his fair share of injury problems. 

And it remains to be seen what United have planned for Van Persie, who turns 32 next August.  

“It is not up to me,” Van Persie told reporters on Monday at an event to mark the launch of United’s link-up with Swissquote as their first global official forex and online trading partner. 

“For the moment, I am staying here for 18 months. That is it really. 

“I can’t look into the future. I don’t know what is going to happen after that. We shall have to wait and see.”

United were held to a 0-0 draw by League Two Cambridge United in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday, and Van Persie acknowledges he and his team-mates need to offer more in the final third.

“I think everyone feels responsible. I certainly do,” he added.

“I think I’ve played 20 games in the league, and scored just eight goals.

“I’m not happy with that, I want more and I will do everything every day in training and keep doing what I’ve been doing for the last 10 years or longer to score goals because it makes so many people happy – including me.”

Van Persie also underlined his confidence in United manager Louis van Gaal, his former coach at international level with the Netherlands.

“I’ve known him for over two years and I know how he works,” said Van Persie.

“Every year I still believe in him, we work together.

“We are trying everything we can to win games, but not only that, we want to do it in a nice way as well. That is a process and in that process we have to be honest and give everything we can.”
